Schools which have been identified for immediate contribution.

Upcoming project
Vincent Girls High School Batticaloa- In urgent need of a partner school. Contact Us.

Sub Project 1:
Dhammarama Kanishta Vidyalaya (750 – 950 students).
Adopted by Musaeus College Colombo

The school which is located in Ahangama in the Galle District, is a Primary school that offers education from Grade 1 to Grade 5. The current school premises which has been almost 100% destroyed, fall within the 300m demarcated area from the sea and hence there is no possibility of re-building at the same site.

The ONE Trust team from Cargills visited this school and met its Principal, Vice Principal, a few parents from the school, and also the visited the temple and the priest who is sheltering some of these children. They were very keen in obtaining our help in re-locating the school and re-building it. They have already found another school in a nearby area further in-land that can accommodate these students in their land. However, they are in dire need of temporary class rooms and other facilities to start off. Since the need is immediate and since a relationship has been established with people of the area who are dedicated to the school, The ONE Trust believes that this will be an ideal sub-project to support. They have sent the details of the immediate needs and we are in the process of identifying suppliers for these needs and volunteers to supervise at the ground level. Teachers are already available for the project.

We have also been informed that Rotary Club has volunteered to build the new school once new premises have been identified, plans drawn etc.

The ONE Trust has also initiated discussions with UNICEF and the Education Ministry who have also welcomed the initiative and have agreed to coordinate and provide any guidance needed.

It is estimated that approx. 10 million will needed in total for the initial stage for the temporary shelter and the final new school.

The ONE TRUST team has already put up 2 sheds which could accommodate 350-400 children for conducting classes. In addition to this, they have provided with the necessary books and other stationery items needed to start academic work.

Total contribution from ONE Trust is Rs. 1.5 mn

A Day with the Kids of Dharmarama Kanishta Vidyalaya

The children and staff of Dharmarama Kanishta Vidyalaya (DKV) were introduced to the team from their foster school Museaus College, Colombo 07, during a day out on May 26 th, 2005. During this day, the representative from The ONE Trust, Girls Guides from the Museaus College and the Principal, staff and children of the DKV spend a day together to workout the future programs for the partnership.

Museaus College donated the immediate needs of the school in terms of stationary and other office supplies while the team spent time with kids and the staff. The immediate future needs of the school were also clarified as cement flooring for the sand floored class rooms, better sheds instead of the cloth tents and a proper regular water supply. The team for the ONE Trust and the Museaus College has planned to hold a health camp on July 22 nd as the next programme for the project. Further, Museaus College agreed to provide the syllabi, the teacher’s notes and other textbooks needed for teaching.

Sub Project 2:
The Diayalagoda Maha Vidyalaya (started in 1864 as the “English School”) was one of the schools affected by the Tsunami.
A BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE ST.JOSEPH’S COLLEGE – DISASTER RELIEF PROJECT

It is situated on the Southern Coast about 90 minutes drive from the Capital Colombo towards Galle very close to Beruwela. It is a Government Secondary School having around 300 pupils, boys & girls from Grade VI to XI. Most of the students come from poor families and orphanages in the vicinity. The majority of their parents have no fixed income. They find it hard to pay a facilities fee of even Rs.5/- (.5$ cents) monthly.

This School is situated in two locations one by the main Galle road and the other 200M down a small country road. It was affected badly by the Tsunami. Buildings near the main road were completely destroyed.

Stage (11)

The building work alone should cost us around Rs.6Mn. When this building is being done the other building will be renovated as that too was under water up to a height of abound 3 ft.
Most of the Steel Furniture, Cupboards, Video equipment, and Lab equipment damaged as a result will have to be replaced.

The cost has been estimated at Rs.2 M for this part of the project just to bring it back to the original condition. This to be done on a priority basis almost immediately.

STAGE (111)

Our period to complete the building (approx 5000 Sq Ft) in two stages is 4 – 5 months.

No sooner the building is completed it is our intention to have the 4 classrooms on the ground floor for1) Computers, 2) Science Lab, 3) Music Room & 4) Home Science. The upper floor to be a hall with a stage. Cost for equipment about Rs.2 M.

SPORTS

The playground, which is about 50 M from the school, is quite large but it too needs rehabilitation. The ground should have proper drainage and the perimeter fenced.

Sports equipment will have to be provided.

Approx cost – Rs.0.75 M.

FUTURE

The Education Department requires us not only to build / renovate the buildings but also to upgrade the standards which we hope to do by adopting the school for a period of at least 2 years.

The buildings have to be maintained on a regular basis, the teachers have to be trained in modern methods and the children given necessary nourishment, care and guidance to reach their full potential.

BUDGET – (Rough Estimate)

New Building - Rs. 6 Mn
Rehabilitation of Old building with new toilets - Rs. 2 Mn
Equipment - Rs. 2 Mn
Sports - Rs. 0.75 Mn
-----------------
Total Cost - Rs. 10.75Mn

Total contribution from ONE Trust Rs. 2M
